Reasons to Sign Up Early:
1. Save money.
2. The first 50 people to sign up for the conference get to pick their editor for critique and their sessions in the order of receipt.
3. There will be 80 first page spots. They will be assigned in order of arrival.
We will have a new activity this coming year, called “Speed Pitching” (sort of like “Speed Dating.”) 60 people will have 1 minute to pitch a new idea to 3 editors with a one minute response. So the first 60 people to sign up will get those spots.
4. The first 40 people signing up for Sudipta Bardhan afternoon workshop will have their first page critiqued by Sudipta.
5. You will be assigned lunch tables. One faculty member will sit with five attendees. They will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. So register early.
Anyone signing up after May 1st, will be placed in available spots and will be put on a waiting list for critiques and first pages.
Published Authors who attend the conference may request to be part of the book signing in the afternoon. Books will be on sale all day, but signing will be held during the “Speed Pitching” in the afternoon. Speed Pitching will be held in the book signing room on the 2nd floor. Tables and chairs will be available in this room for anyone who wants to sit and chat during the day.
Illustrators may bring prints of their work or other vehicles that show off their work, but nothing can be sold for over $35.00 and they must notify a month a head of time with list of what they will be selling.
Anyone may sign up for an additional critique may do so with the authors below:
Susan and Sandra Steen – Published picture books, chapter books and non-fiction books.
Dianne Ochiltree - Published picture books.
Robin Friedman - Published Middle Grade and Young Adult novels.
Definitions:
First Page critique: A group of people meet in a room with two editors. Their first pages are read to the editors and the editors give thoughts about what they’ve heard.
One-on-One Critique: This is where you meet with an editor to discuss what you submitted before the conference.
Speed Pitches: This is like Speed Dating. You get to pitch your manuscript or idea like you would if you were sending in a query letter trying to find out if there is any interest. You have 120 seconds to give your pitch and the editor has 120 seconds to respond.
Group Critique: This is being done on Friday night. It is a session with your peers to discuss your manuscript. Friday attendees will be assigned to a critique group and you will e-mail each other your writing ahead of time, so you are prepared to discuss on Friday night.
One-on-One Critique: This is where you meet with an editor to discuss what you submitted before the conference.
Attendees who have secured a one-on-one critique, please send the following:
First 15 pages and synopsis for Middle Grade and Young Adult
Full text for Picture Books
Manuscript must be postmarked by April 26, 2008.
$10 fee for manuscripts received after deadline.
If a manuscript is received after May 2nd, the critique spot and fee will be forfeited.
